At the end of the day, marketing managers must have a good idea of what marketing calls for in a given situation. They must be able to make decisions on the fly, such as what to use, what to say, and what to sell.
This is a very good point. Marketing is about making decisions that matter to the customer and then selling those decisions to them. Marketing managers are in a unique position to determine what matters in a given situation and then make decisions in a timely manner. So good marketing managers will be able to anticipate the needs of their customer and then be able to make decisions in a very timely manor.
I guess this is a good point. I do like the idea that it’s important to be able to figure out what people want in a given situation, but on the other hand, I’m not sure I’m happy that we can’t choose to say something different in our marketing. The fact that we can’t choose to say something different would seem to undermine the whole “we’re selling something” idea.
