It is estimated that 40% of fatal highway crashes involve alcohol. These numbers are staggering and should not be ignored. It is important to understand the risks when drinking and driving, as well as how to get help if you need it.

In this article, we will explore what kind of effects alcohol has on drivers and more importantly, why these accidents happen in the first place. Each year about 100 people die from a drunk driver hitting them head-on at 50 miles per hour while they were walking down the road or standing waiting for their bus (DOT).

Considering those sobering statistics – which represent only a fraction of all traffic fatalities involving an intoxicated driver – there’s never been a better time than now to prevent such tragedies by considering the following:

The fact that alcohol slows your reaction time, lowers coordination and increases recklessness.

A – The effects of alcohol on judgment related to risk-taking behaviours such as speeding or driving without a seatbelt

B – How being unconscious due to intoxication can result in death from choking in vomit at night while sleeping, for example (in addition to any other injuries incurred).

C- Alcohol is more likely than not going to impair you with its effects no matter what type it is.

A standard drink maybe 12 ounces of beer, five ounces of wine or one shot of liquor, but these amounts will vary depending on the size and gender of the person who has consumed them.
