The angiosperms are the closest living relatives to the land plants. The name “angiosperm” comes from two Greek words, meaning “vessel bearing seeds.” They are called this because they have vessels in their xylem that transport water and nutrients from one part of the plant to another.

This is a defining characteristic of all angiosperms. There are over 300,00 species of angiosperms on Earth today.
