There are four basic ways to identify an animal: by its fur, body shape, track pattern, and behaviors. With so many animals in the world that can be identified by these characteristics it’s important to know how each method works so you can narrow down your research. Animals have a large variety of fur patterns and colors which makes them easy to identify when they are close-up and in person.
However, identifying animals from pictures is much more difficult because their distinctive features may not show up well or at all on camera. Body shape identification relies solely on observing the outline of an animal from afar; however this too becomes difficult with photos because it’s hard for people to tell what size the animal is just by looking at it. Knowing the track pattern of an animal is a great way to identify it in both photos and person, but you must be able to find its tracks or droppings first.
Finally, behaviors are often unique for each species which makes them another good characteristic to use when identifying animals from afar. Fur patterns: vary by breed.
