There are many different types of reinforcement for people. Positive reinforcement is the most common, and it strengthens a response when presented after that response. It’s easy to know whether something is reinforcing or not: if you get an award every time you do well in school, then grades are strengthening your studies.

If you get a raise every time you work overtime at work, then working overtime is reinforcing your need for more money!
