This time of year, I want my family to be able to communicate with me without the internet.
Windows 10 really wants to help you get online, but there is one minor problem. There is no way to turn off the internet on your PC without doing something really embarrassing. That’s because Windows 10 actually has a very clever hack. It takes a moment to install and it requires you to have a certain number of Internet connections. So in theory, you could disconnect your modem, disconnect your cable, and get rid of all your Internet connections in one fell swoop.
It’s not really a bad idea, but it is very, very difficult. The reason for this is that Windows 10 has a very special feature called “WiFi Direct.” This is a feature that allows you to connect to a Wi-Fi network and then disconnect from it. But because Windows 10 is still in beta, it’s not yet available in all of our test PCs. If you do manage to access an Internet connection, the first thing you’ll find is your modem.
For most people, this is just going to be a nuisance. But for those with special needs like autism or severe epilepsy, this could be life altering. If you like to read or write by hand, you will find that wifi direct is a lifesaver. The WiFi Direct feature actually works by having your modem connect to a router and then having that router connect to your laptop. It works so well because if your laptop has an internet connection, your modem can automatically connect to it.
Windows 10 does have this feature, but it’s not as simple as that. To get your modem connected, you have to have a network connection (like a wired Ethernet connection in the office) and then you have to have a set of keys to the modem. The modem will connect to your network with the help of those keys. But this is a hassle for most people, so you can just enable windows to automatically connect to your wifi when your laptop starts up.
It’s not really a hassle. If you have a wired connection, it takes a few minutes to connect to your network, but its not slow. I’m using my laptop and wireless connection at home all the time, so I was just curious to see if windows 10 automatically connects to my network.
Yeah, this is a big one. When your laptop starts up, it automatically connects to your network to which you don’t have a working internet connection. It’s not really a big deal, but it does slow things down a bit. There is a way to disable this, which I’ve always found annoying, but I never tried to figure it out.
I think you might need to re-configure your router.
It seems like a pretty easy fix. Once you have your computer configured properly, go to Connection Settings in the network panel and make sure that your router is set to automatically connect to your network.
If you want to disable internet access to your computer, you can do so in Internet/Settings/Network. If you’re using Windows 7, you will need to be the administrator.
